Hook
She stopped where she was, staring. All that time, while she had dithered in the grocery aisles, while she had sat in the unfamiliar restroom quietly feeding Phoebe, this light had been spilling out across the snow. When she tried the ignition it merely clicked, the battery so dead the engine wouldn't even groan.
She got out of the car and stood by the open door. The parking lot was empty now; the last car had driven away. She began to laugh. It wasn't a normal laugh; even Caroline could hear that: her voice too loud, halfway to a sob. "I have a baby," she said out loud, astonished. "I have a baby in this car." But the parking lot stretched quietly before her, the lights from the grocery store windows making large rectangles in the slush. "I have a baby here," Caroline repeated, her voice thinning quickly in the air. "A baby!" she shouted then, into the stillness. - Edwards 35 |
Angeline's Thoughts
|
My opinion on this book can be confusing in the sense that I both liked and disliked it at the same time. My dis-enjoyment was more due to the organization style and the characters in the story. Kim Edwards' organization style was difficult for me to follow at first because of the back-and-forth point of views of the two different families but after I got about half way through the boo it was easier to follow and I was used to her writing style. Some people enjoy reading books with back-and-forth point of views, but I do not at first. Kim uses this style to serve the storyline of the book; it helps to create a better understandable timeline between Phoebe and Paul's life with their families. Since Phoebe and Paul were separated at birth by their father, due to his selfish decision based on the fact that Phoebe had down syndrome, the twins grew up in different families. The other thing that I disliked was the characters, or more specifically, a character. David, the father of Phoebe, was willing to give his daughter away out of his own selfishness and then deceived his wife and let her believe their baby girl had died. I became irritated with some character's decisions throughout the book but liked the novel because i wanted to see how it all ended up. I do believe that it is of higher literary merit due to the fact that there was at least one constant theme carried throughout the book. its safe to say that Kim Edwards makes it easy to read but you should be prepared to back track in your reading and review a passage once or twice. It took me a little longer to read The Memory Keeper's Daughter because I found myself re-reading many passages to connect them and make predictions and such. You do get drawn in by the characters and they I would still recommend this to some. I didn't like the book because the characters irritated me but it was very well written and I would recommend it to and I would still recommend it to some.
